چکیده

We study a simple ow control method for ATM networks cal l ed peri odi c averaging of rate (PARing). Thi s method attempts to reduce the burstiness of tra c by bu ering. We present asymptoti c resul ts, obtained via the theory of l arge deviati ons, on the memory requi rements, the multiplexing gainof PARed sources, and the tradeo s between bu ering inside and outside of the network. We di scuss resul ts on the analysi s of networks (beyond singl e queues) when thi s method i s used. These resul ts exhibi t the potenti al for network l evel i nteracti on betweenstreams. We then propose an improved versi on of PARing whi ch i s akin to using a moving average l ter. We present prel iminary simulati ons for video sources.

The Simulation of Pricing Algorithms for ATM Networks

Effective bandwidth and incentive compatible pricing algorithms for ATM networks are considered for simulation using the OPNET ATM Modelling Suite. The paper focuses on the modification of AMS data structures and processes to support charging algorithms. The network models and traffic generators used for the pricing simulations are discussed in terms of the demands on multiservice networks, whi...

Synthetic Traffic Generation Techniques For ATM Network Simulations

This paper presents a synthetic traffic modeling approach to generate bursty, long-range dependent (LRD) traffic flows for ATM network simulations. The approach uses Fractional-ARIMA processes and a set of mathematical transformations to generate traffic streams with a wide range of user-specified traffic characteristics. With this modeling approach, the user can control the short-range and lon...

The Entropy and Delay of Traffic Processes in Atm Networks

In this paper we discuss the application of some recent results obtained from studying the asymptotics and the entropy of flows in large queueing systems to the analysis of entropy variations of traffic processes in ATM networks. We argue that certain important queueing nodes/networks (e.g. ·/M/1, ·/GI/∞ nodes and Jackson networks) are entropy increasing in nature, in that the entropy of the ar...

Guaranteed Frame Rate : a better service for TCP/IP in ATM networks

Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) recently approved by the ATM Forum is expected to become an important service category to efficiently support TCP/IP traffic in ATM networks. We first describe the GFR traffic contract in details. We then present different types of switch implementations that have been proposed to support GFR. We analyze the performance of three of these switch implementations by sim...

New transfer methods for client-server traffic in ATM networks

This paper presents new transfer schemes for clientserver traffic over ATM networks, with the objective of achieving a bounded transmission time of about one second for as many connection requests as possible. We evaluate via simulations the performance of these new schemes in terms of network utilization, cell loss ratio, and transmission time. The simulation results show that these schemes pr...
